The Software Engineering Theory and Practice (STEP) is newly established research group at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT). Its members are engaged in fundamental research and education to advancing software engineering theory and practices. We are building theory of software engineering from the understanding and analysis of development practices in industry. The niches of research include empirical studies, software-intensive systems development and organizational processes, user experiences-driven engineering, user interface design and evaluation, as well those challenging quality factors such as sustainability, privacy, and security.

The research investigations conducted by the STEP group are driven by empirical-evidences (empirical software engineering) and is human-centric (human-centric software engineering). Empirical evidences are collected via qualitative field studies conducted in real world organizations in different fields and industries. We also conduct controlled experiments and quantitative user research in our living lab, CODER (Co-Design, Experimentation and Innovation with User Experiences). These two dimensions of empirical evidences inform not only the development and validation of innovative software systems but they are also the foundations for a new theory of software engineering.

The CODER lab features various technology for the iterative prototyping and testing software and information-intensive services in controlled conditions. The lab is a unique place to innovate and co-create the next generation user-oriented software eco-systems that focuses on an understanding of the user's needs and experiences.

The research group's most important form of expertise is in understanding software development, management and usage practices - both technology-based pursuits that involve an abundance of theoretical and mathematical research. However, the research group also understands these as human activities the research of which must take into account what we already understand about industrial and commercial environments and the organizational and business questions related to them. Integrating sustainability in the software product development lifecycle is a topic that is receiving a great as part of the major focus of Lappeenranta University of Technology on sustainable development and green technologies (see the LUT SIG-3S (Special Interest Group on Sustainability is Software and Systems).

STEP is also the house for offering students an education that prepares them to take a leading role in complex software development projects. Our group members are actively involved in the teaching and design of various programs including the bachelor of computer science, the master of computer science with a major in software engineering, the Erasmus Mundus Master program in Pervasive Computing and Communications for Sustainable Development (PERCCOM). We are also running a Ph.D program in software engineering. Many of our Ph.D students are engaged in dual program with other European and international institutions, via among other the PWs@PhD Erasmus+ project.
